A Visit to Women In Action Reaching: Out by Michelle Leer

WIARO (Women In Action Reaching Out) is a non-profit organization that provides healthy meals and nutritional classes to Seniors and at-risk families in the Long Beach and South Bay areas. I met up with WIARO at the North Long Beach Carmelitos Housing Projects. which is home to 1,500 residents and has a long waiting list of people hoping to move in.

WIARO partners with The Carmelitos Housing Project and uses their impressive kitchen facilities to provide lunches, Monday through Friday.  I was informed by some of the Seniors, that this is the only meal they are able to eat, due to low income and or physical limitations. WIARO also assists with the youth population at The Carmelitos House Projects, by providing after school snacks and supper for up to 125 kids. WIARO also prepares and transport meals to assigned Boys & Girls Clubs in the South Bay area.

When asked what more can Food Finders do for them, they informed me that they can use help stocking-up their supply of non-perishable food, because they occasionally receive requests from residents that need assistance making ends meet, until they receive their check. Women In Action Reaching out always utilizes food containers to help with the transportation of their meals. I am proud of the fact that they “make things happen”, as Women In Action Reaching Out is passionate about changing lives.

Daniel “Skip” Gibson, Carmelitos Resident Service Coordinator, observed the food insecurities rampant among his Residents and without hesitation, began formulating a plan to assist those in need. Daniel Gibson began by gathering a team consisting of Intern Susan Cortez and various other Resident Volunteers.

Gibson then partnered with the Long Beach Food Bank to begin assisting his Residents. Unfortunately,

Daniel “Skip” Gibson passed away on October 6th, 2014 but not before passing the torch to Women In Action Reaching Out. We continue to carry the torch in efforts to keep Daniel Skip Gibsons dream alive.

January 2021 marks the Sixth year that Women in Action Reaching Out has been able to provide constant Food Distribution Services for the Long Beach Carmelitos Housing Residents. Women in Action Reaching Out is fully committed to continuing in the fight against food insecurities.
